car towing caravan

Ok, so you’ve checked your licence to make sure that it covers towing. The next step is to research cars that are perfect for towing your caravan/trailer, while also being a pleasure to drive every day. Here are a few of our favourites:

1.Volkswagen Arteon 2.0 TDI 150PS Elegance DSG:

Competitively priced, cheap to run, comfortable to drive, stylish and surprisingly spacious – do we need any more reasons to justify the Arteon’s place on this list?

2.BMW 5 Series Touring 520d xDrive M Sport:

An exceptional tow car – but this doesn’t come cheap. Luckily, this estate is comfortable, refined, spacious and well worth the money - if you can afford it. And with its punchy engine, it can cope with most driving challenges.

  • Maximum Towing Capacity: 2,000kg.
  • Luggage Capacity: 570 litres of boot space.
  • Fuel Economy: 35mpg-60mpg.
  • Fuel Economy Achieved When Towing: 28.4mpg.
  • Stability: Outstanding. Maintains control at high speeds and when changing lanes.
  • Purchase Price: Around £40,000-£55,000 new.
  • Our Range of BMW 5 Series Cars:

3.Volkswagen Touareg:

The most expensive car on this list. But what a car! With suspension components inspired by Bentley, the chassis borrowed from Porsche and the driveline from Lamborghini – this car is a work of art. It also has the largest towing capacity on this list, the Touareg is more than capable of towing the new generation of 4 berth and 6 berth caravans.

  • Maximum Towing Capacity: 3,500kg.
  • Luggage Capacity: 810 litres of boot space.
  • Fuel Economy: 42.8mpg.
  • Fuel Economy Achieved When Towing: 24.4mpg.
  • Stability: Excellent ability to handle lane-changing, emergency manoeuvres and high speeds.
  • Purchase Price: On the expensive side, a new Touareg will set you back between £49,135 – £59,275 to buy.
  • Our Range of Touareg Cars:

4.SsangYong Korando:

For its size, weight and performance – you will struggle to find a similar all-rounder for the price. The Korando has been around for a while and is constantly improving.

  • Maximum Towing Capacity: 2,000kg.
  • Luggage Capacity: 486 litres of boot space. 1,312 litres with the rear seats down.
  • Fuel Economy: 53.3mpg.
  • Fuel Economy Achieved When Towing: 28.3mpg.
  • Stability: Capable of lane-changing and getting up to speed with ease. Though doesn’t feel quite as stable as some other cars on this list.
  • Purchase Price: Between £20,000 - £25,000. Very reasonably priced for a ‘towing car.’ Winner of the Caravan & Motorhome Club Tow Car Awards in the under £24,000 category.

5.Seat Ateca 2.0 TSI 190 FR DSG:

The Seat Ateca is one of the best SUV tow cars on the market. This powerful, efficient 4-wheel drive is absolutely worth considering. Predicted resale values are also strong.
